Quad Bikes / ATV's
Quad bikes, are also known as all-terrain vehicles or ATVs, and are best described
as essentially four-wheeled motorbikes. Honda produced the first production-model
ATV in 1970, with three wheels, it was an instant hit with both leisure and commercial
users, but it was relatively unstable, and after a series of serious accidents and
negative press reports, some countries even banned them! The first four-wheeled
quad to be mass-produced for recreational use was the LT-125 Quad Runner from
Suzuki in 1983.
Quad Bikes, or ATV's as they are also referred to, can have either manual or fully
automatic transmission, and steering is done via a set of handlebars just the same as a
motorcycle. The engines are also similar to those of a motorbike, typically ranging from 50 to
700cc.
Today's bikes fall into two basic categories: "sport" or "fun" ATVs, which are two-wheel
drive and capable of speeds of up to 120kph, aimed squarely at the fun or leisure user;
while four-wheel-drive utility vehicles are primarily designed to handle rough terrain and
have a top speed of around 100kph. This type of Quad Bike is popular with farmers and other
commercial users. There are even amphibious quads (AATVs), invariably with six to eight wheels.
